Diffused electroless nickel plating
For offshore applications

What is diffused electroless nickel plating?

Corrosion protection & wear resistance

Hard electroless nickel plating is an electroless nickel coating (9-12 wt% P) that is heat treated at 650 °C.

This produces a diffusion layer in the steel substrate that results in:

  • High corrosion resistance
  • High wear resistance under extreme conditions (750 HV)

The coating is often applied in the offshore industry.

Corrosion resistance of diffused electroless nickel plating

The high P content (> 9 wt% P) gives the electroless nickel coating excellent resistance to corrosion. Different results can be achieved, depending on the thickness of the coating.

Because the layer is diffused in the substrate, the coating remains effective even after deformation.

Corrosion resistance in accordance with the neutral salt spray test under ISO 9227: 1,000 hours.

Technical properties of diffused electroless nickel plating

Heat-treated at 650°C to a hardness of 750 HV
High phosphorus content

Thickness: 75 µm (as standard)
Diffusion layer: 2 to 5 µm
The diffused layer does not crack after being bent at an angle of 180° over a mandrel, in accordance with ASTM B571.
